Emotional Reactions of Children to Domestic Violence
There are several general reactions children from abusive homes are likely to show. The same emotional reactions can be acted out differently according to the childs age.
- Feeling responsible for the abuse
- Constant anxiety
- Guilt for not stopping the abuse
- Grief
- Sadness
- Depression
- Ambivalence
- Fear of abandonment
- Need for excessive adult attention
- Fear of physical harm to themselves
- Embarrassment
- Worry about the future
- Allegiance to the family or to the abuser
- Repetition of abuse (ie bullying or sexual abuse)
- Exaggerated boundaries (acting withdrawn/ introverted or aggressive/ inappropriate)
- Poor impulse control
